Requests

How do I request a test?

Email us at pileta@pileta.co.kr with your company name and contact details, the material or specimens to be tested, the test items and conditions you need, and your preferred schedule. Please also let us know if you need an English-language test report.

A test engineer will review your request and contact you to agree on the test method, schedule and cost. You can also reach us by phone at +82-42-368-0180. For an overview of the process, see Request a test.

What happens after I submit a request?

Accredited testing follows five steps: request → review and quotation → contract → testing → test report. Your email request is the first step.

After reviewing your request, our engineers agree with you on the test method and conditions. Testing proceeds after the quotation and contract, and a test report is issued on completion. The assigned test engineer will keep you informed of progress directly.

How should specimens be prepared?

Each test has specimen dimension and quantity requirements set by the applicable standard. You may send material in its unmachined condition; we will advise you on specimen requirements (dimensions, quantity and surface condition) during the agreement step. For in-service components from which standard specimens are difficult to obtain, subsize specimen testing is also available, so please contact us first.

How long does testing take?

It depends on the test. Tensile, hardness and impact tests are relatively short, whereas creep and fatigue tests can run for hundreds to thousands of hours. We provide an estimated schedule during the agreement step. If your request is urgent, please tell us when you submit it, and we will coordinate according to equipment availability.

Can I change or cancel a request?

To change or cancel a request, please contact us by email or phone. Changes can be arranged before testing begins; cancellations or changes after testing has started are subject to separate consultation.

Accredited testing

What tests can you perform?

PILETA’s scope of accreditation under KOLAS (Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme) covers 25 test items, including tensile testing (room, elevated and low temperatures), creep, low-cycle fatigue (LCF), high-cycle fatigue (HCF), thermomechanical fatigue (TMF), fracture toughness (KIc and JIc), fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR), Charpy impact testing (room, elevated and low temperatures) and hardness (Vickers and Rockwell). Demanding tests such as TMF, KIc, JIc and FCGR are performed in-house.

Can you test at very high temperatures?

Yes. Our high-temperature test systems support demanding applications such as the evaluation of gas turbine superalloys. Specific test conditions depend on the test item and specimen and are agreed when you request a test.

What does KOLAS accreditation mean for test reports used outside Korea?

PILETA is a KOLAS-accredited testing laboratory (Accreditation No. KT921). KOLAS is a signatory to the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (ILAC MRA), which facilitates the acceptance of accredited test reports in other signatory economies.

Failure analysis

How do I request failure analysis?

Email us at pileta@pileta.co.kr with a description of the failed component, its specifications and operating conditions, and the purpose of the analysis. If you are not sure which analyses are needed, describe the situation and our engineers will review it and propose a suitable scope.

How does your root cause analysis (RCA) process work?

Failure analysis to identify the root cause proceeds in four steps:

  1. Visual and macroscopic examination: macroscopic observation of fracture surfaces and crack measurement
  2. High-magnification microstructural analysis: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical and laser microscopy, with deep-learning-based automated segmentation
  3. Degradation grade assessment: analysis of creep voids and γ′ precipitates, with grading on a four-level scale (A–D)
  4. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) elemental analysis: mapping of segregation and diffusion layers to identify the causes of corrosion and oxidation

By reviewing microstructural changes together with environmental factors and operating history, we identify the root cause on the basis of quantitative data and issue a report.

What should I prepare for failure analysis?

Please prepare the failed component (or specimens taken from it), together with photographs of the damaged area, operating history (operating hours, temperature, pressure and number of starts) and material information. In your email, include the specifications and equipment operating conditions, and attach photographs, drawings and operating history files. The more specific the information, the faster and more accurate the analysis.
